Jack Ma Yun (Chinese: ; pinyin: m yn; born 10 September 1964) is a Chinese business mogul, philanthropist, and investor. Alibaba Group, a multinational technological corporation, is his co-founder and former executive chairman. He also co-founded the private equity business Yunfeng Capital. Ma is a staunch supporter of a market-driven, open economy.
Ma came in second place on Fortune's annual "World's 50 Greatest Leaders" list in 2017. [3] He is generally regarded as an unofficial worldwide ambassador for Chinese industry, as well as a prominent person in the startup scene. [4] In September 2018, he announced his retirement from Alibaba to focus on educational work, charity, and environmental causes;[5][6][7][8] Daniel Zhang took over as executive chairman the next year. With a net worth of $51.5 billion as of April 2021, Ma is China's third richest person (after Zhong Shanshan and Ma Huateng), as well as one of the world's wealthiest individuals (ranked 26th by Bloomberg Billionaires Index). Jack Ma was born in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, in the province of Zhejiang. At an early age, he began learning English by interacting with English speakers at Hangzhou International Hotel. Ma would ride his bicycle 27 kilometers (17 miles) to offer tourists tours of the region to improve his English for nine years. He became pen buddies with one of the foreigners, who dubbed him "Jack" since his Chinese name was difficult to say. [11]

Ma struggled to attend college later in his life. Ma failed the Hangzhou Teachers College admission test twice since mathematics was his weak area. [12] Ma took three years to complete the Chinese admission examinations, which are held once a year. Ma received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Hangzhou Teacher's Institute (now known as Hangzhou Normal University) in 1988. [13] [14] Ma was the president of the student council in her high school. [15] He went on to teach English and international commerce at Hangzhou Dianzi University after graduation. He also claims to have applied to Harvard Business School ten times and been turned down each time. [16]
